Press Release - 64 Studio 2.1 'A Minha Menina' released!

Isle of Wight, UK, 9th June, 2008

64 Studio is a GNU/Linux distribution tailor-made for digital content creation, including audio, video, graphics and publishing tools. A remix of Debian 4.0 'Etch', it comes in both AMD64/Intel64 and 32-bit flavours, to run on nearly all PC hardware. We aim to combine the stability and quality of Etch with a specialised real-time preemption kernel and the latest creative tools demanded by multimedia artists. Our tweaks to Debian include simplified installation and default settings which help get production started quickly.

Installing Reaper on 64 Studio

Reaper

REAPER is reasonably priced Windows software for multi-track audio production.
It requires no dongle, has no copy protection, and can be evaluated with full functionality.

This is a quick How To instruction to get it going in 64 Studio with full Jack support

Major security flaw in Etch SSL packages

Two days ago, a major security flaw was discovered in Debian's SSL packages:

http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2008-0166
http://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/2008/msg00152.html

All 64 Studio users who ever use SSH to allow remote access should update their systems against the http://security.debian.org/ repository, unless they have already done so today.

Press Release - Have Ubuntu your way: 64 Studio Ltd. announces new custom distribution services

Isle of Wight, UK, 22nd April, 2008

Bespoke GNU/Linux distribution specialist 64 Studio Ltd. announces today that its Debian customisation platform has been extended to support Ubuntu sources. This means that the company can now produce, maintain and support one-off distributions which retain package compatibility with official Ubuntu releases.

Rather than forks, 64 Studio's bespoke distributions can be updated in parallel with Ubuntu's half yearly release cycle, or against Long Term Support releases, including the forthcoming Ubuntu Hardy Heron LTS.

Red book export from Ardour for GCDMaster

You have your recording in Ardour. Mixed to perfection, tracks lined up in the correct order. Now you want to export you stuff to a Red-book CD for mastering, or if you did the mastering yourself, for duplication.

Here are the steps to follow...

Rivendell on 64studio

Rivendell is a radio broadcasting application written by broadcasters for broadcasters.

http://www.rivendellaudio.org/

They have an excellent Wiki, with a very detailed Debian etch install page, most of which you'll find already done on the 64studio install. The only problem is that they do not have 64bit install packages, so I sourced some...

VST and VSTi How-to (for 32-bit systems)

VST and VSTi support can be hit and miss on free software systems, but some of the most popular plugins can be made to work well. In this how-to I describe installation of the Native Instruments B4 II Hammond organ emulator. The plugin is stable and CPU usage averages around 15% on a low-end Turion CPU, which is acceptable for a soft synth.

The Creative Desktop

This manual for new users of 64 Studio is intended to cover enough general aspects of creative work to provide a starting point for your own multi-media adventures. This will eventually include 2D and 3D graphics, animation techniques, publishing, web design, audio production and video editing, as well as many other useful bits in between.

OEM Products

GNU/Linux is now found in thousands of embedded products and specialised systems, but starting the development process with a general-purpose distribution can mean unnecessary extra work and a maintenance headache, particularly when development of the underlying code advances at a rapid pace. We can help!

User support now available

The 64 Studio Ltd. company, which supports the free software project, now offers commercial support to users of the distribution. Standard pricing is not per-machine or per-user, but based on a typical small studio with up to three machines (desktop, laptop or rackmount). This support package is offered five days per week, in office hours (9-5pm UTC). Support is delivered in English via email, and the guaranteed response time is one working day.
